About Me

The journey so far.

Designer, Creator and Tutor
Debs creative journey started in early childhood when her happiest times were spent doodling on paper with coloured pencils. This was just the start of a fascination with colour and texture that developed into a career.

After studying art and design at York College of Art she then chose textile design and technology at Huddersfield University. After successfully achieving an associateship of the textile institute with distinction, winning sponsored competitions for woven fabric designs and winning the Courtaulds prize for best portfolio she was inspired to this path as a career.

Starting as a design assistant in a textile mill in Bradford, hard work and dedication along with a flair for colour meant a promotion to ladies wear designer, developing woven fabrics for high street stores such as Marks Andy Spencer and Next, and bespoke fabrics for fashion icons Alexander Mc Queen and Patrick Cox.

15 years working in this fast moving creative field meant the development of vital skills such as working closely with customers, forecasting new trends and colours, developing fabric ranges and presenting these to the market.

Then for a change of scenery and a move to Cambridgeshire and a new career passing on knowledge to others.

15 years spent lecturing in Art and Design, Fashion, Surface Pattern, Textiles and Theatrical Costume and inspiring the creative futures of others. With a love of manipulating fabrics, combining colours and creating unique designs, shapes and forms has led to the creation of That SpecIan Occasion, designer millinery combining traditional hat making techniques and fabrics with modern and classic printed fabrics and designs inspired by classic vintage glamour and style.

Then in 2017 The Creative Craftorium was created as a workshop area were people can come and learn a range of different textile and mixed media techniques in a friendly  inspiring space.

Debs also visits textile groups and encourages crafters to experiment with different media and develop their creativity.

Located at the Studios around the back at the Art  Centre 20 High Street Haddenham  Cambridgeshire.

My Medium

I use all kinds of different fabrics, both natural and synthetic, combining traditional hand stitched embroidery along with decorative machine stitching and free arm embroidery. For finishing touches beads, crystals, metal, wire and hand made flowers are often added for a bit of jazz.

My Inspiration

Inspiration comes from the landscapes, plants, buildings and architecture of Cambridgeshire.

I enjoy walking in my spare time and many of my pieces are directly influenced by the nature, plants and landscapes. I love recreating these images in creative Textile work.
